White wines

Discover here our selection of white wines from France mainly and from around the world. Are you looking for well-known references, big houses or more or less famous small winegrowers and producers? You are in the right place, or at least on the right page.

We are in a golden period for lovers of white wines. The era of chardonnays that are too oily, too woody, too buttery and Sauvignons too sweet and too "exotic" planted everywhere seems to be over. The regions are returning to their classic style and allow us to discover or rediscover old or forgotten grape varieties.

The wines of the Loire and the Jura, fresh and authentic, are particularly trendy and that's good! The Burgundians are reinventing themselves to adapt to rising temperatures, producing wines that are livelier, more suitable for aging and less subject to oxidation (at least for some of them). Nuggets are emerging in the South-West, the Rhône valley and in Bordeaux.

Beautiful tastings in perspective for those who wish to discover this selection.

  • Bordeaux

Bordeaux is known for its great red wines, but there are also some very good white wines.

Starting with the sweet wines, from Sauternes, Barsac, wines that cross the ages without difficulty! Ideal if you want to please a loved one by choosing the vintage.

Sweet wines tend to be tasted with foie gras for example, but they go wonderfully with blue cheeses, on which they provide a very pleasant contrast! So indulge yourself with a Château Suduiraut, Rieussec, La Tour Blanche or even the famous Yquem!

Dry whites, for their part made from Sauvignon among others, are always extremely pleasant to taste and will go wonderfully with seafood, for example.

Did you know that famous estates known for their red wine also produce white? this is the case with the famous Château Cos d'Estournel but we can also mention Smith Haut Lafitte, Carbonnieux, La Louvière.

  • Burgundy

There is so much to say about Burgundy whites !

Made exclusively from the Chardonnay grape, except Saint-Bris which is the only appellation authorized to use Sauvignon, these are wines that often tend towards pastry, rather buttery notes. Endowed with a beautiful acidity, like their red friends from Pinot Noir, they often have good aging potential, but they still have to be preserved from light because white wines do not react well to them at all!

Good thing, at WUAT, we are very attentive to this subject. This is how a 1978 Corton-Charlemagne stunned us with its still light color and remarkable freshness, it had always been kept in perfect conditions.

We know Burgundy, in white, for its magnificent Meursault, Chablis, Puligny-Montrachet, to name but a few ...

How about finding bottles from the famous Coche-Dury estate or Raveneau at home and enjoying a great tasting moment?

  • Rhône Valley

The white Côtes du Rhône are dry wines.

They are produced in the Rhône-Méridionale region. The vineyard enjoys a Mediterranean climate.

The main white grape varieties are Grenache blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Bourboulenc or Clairette.

If we find generic white Côtes du Rhône, the appellations that stand out are especially Saint-Joseph, Condrieu, Château Grillet or even L'Hermitage but also know that Châteauneuf-du-Pape also produces white.

If the Condrieu will give rather rich wines, the Saint-Joseph will offer fresher, less "fatty" wines.

If you do not yet know the white Côtes-Du-Rhône, it is not too late to get started!

  • Jura

If you are told Vin du Jura, do you spontaneously think of vin de paille or Macvin?

The region is known for also producing very beautiful Savagnins with slightly oxidative notes but also sublime Chardonnays capable of competing with some Burgundy wines.

Famous estates have made a great place for themselves in the international world of wine, such as Ganevat and Tissot.

Good thing, as we tend to like the best at WUAT, we have them!

To discover as soon as possible.

  • Loire

The Loire is known for its white wines more than for its other wines. This is normal, they represent almost half of the wines produced in the region. Rosés and reds respectively represent around 20% and sparkling wines a little over 10%.

The appellations of the Loire Valley and the center are numerous but among the best known there is obviously Sancerre, produced from sauvignon blanc, but also Savennières, Anjou, Muscadet, Pouilly-Fumé and Ménetou-Salon for n 'to name a few.

Some estates are recognized worldwide for their skilful work, such as Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau whose Silex cuvée must surely tell you something ... as well as perhaps the Pur Sang cuvée, and for the greatest amateurs its confidential cuvée En Chailloux.

Nicolas Joly with his fabulous work on the biodynamic Coulée de Serrant clos is also from this region, as well as the Huet domain which produces Vouvray.
