Mazis-Chambertin Grand-Cru 1999 - Hospices de Beaune - Cuvée Madeleine Collignon - Bottled by Louis Gras
The Hospices of Beaune:
Every year, on the third Sunday of November, the famous "candlelight" auction of the Great Wines of the Domaine des Hospices takes place, built up over the centuries thanks to generous donations. These great wines in barrels are taken care of by the buyers who have the delicate mission of raising them and bottling them.
About the cuvée:
Created in homage to Madeleine Collignon, benefactress of the Beaune hospital who bequeathed a plot of vines in the climate of Mazis-Chambertin. It is one of the finest pieces put up for sale by the Hospices.
This cuvée was bottled by Louis Gras. Other "parts" were bottled by other producers for the same vintage. We can notably cite Louis Jadot or Dominique Laurent, of whom we also have a few bottles at WUAT.
The Mazis-Chambertin appellation has only 8.65 hectares for a total annual production of less than 50,000 bottles. Learn more thanks to the technical sheets available in the attached documents tab.
About the 1999 vintage:
1999 is a "very great vintage" for the wines of Gevrey-Chambertin and Mazis-Chambertin. The climatic conditions were ideal, with a hot and dry summer, which allowed the grapes to reach good maturity, while maintaining good acidity. The wines produced in 1999 are therefore very well structured, with great finesse and a beautiful aromatic complexity.
The Cuvée Madeleine Collignon 1999 presents an intense ruby color and aromas of ripe red fruits, undergrowth and spices. In the mouth, it offers a nice tannic structure, a nice freshness and a long finish.
