Hermitage "Les Greffières" 1991 - Domaine L. de Vallouit
About the estate L. de Vallouit:
Bottles just out from the estate! After excellent aging conditions.
Domaine L. de Vallouit was a magnificent family estate in the northern Rhône Valley. One of the few to have vines in all the northern Rhône appellations, with the exception of Château Grillet, of course. In 2001, the estate's vines were taken over by Guigal, which incorporated them into some of its most prestigious cuvées.
About the cuvée:
The Hermitage appellation was created in 1937, the Syrah vines, from which the red wines come, benefit from a unique, essentially granitic terroir. The diversity of these soils has led to the creation of famous localities such as Le Méal or, as here, Les Greffieux/Les Greffières.
About the 1991 vintage at Hermitage:
The red Hermitage is THE great success of the 1991 vintage in the Rhône Valley, with, to a lesser extent, the wines of Côte-Rôtie.
1991 is a very interesting vintage for the wines of the Rhone Valley as the disparity in quality is important between the north and the south. The Syrahs from the north are excellent, which is less obvious for the Grenaches from the southern appellations.
