Ducru-Beaucaillou 1989 - Saint-Julien

About the estate

In the commune of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle is the Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. An estate of 75 hectares classified as second grand cru in the 1855 classification. The estate has existed since 1720, with six successive families of owners.

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou owes its name to the "beautiful pebbles", called Graves Gunziennes, which are quartz pebbles carried by the primitive Gironde at the start of the early Quaternary, probably nearly two million years ago.

These Günzian gravels gave rise to lean soils, whose agrological poverty guarantees the qualitative excellence of the wines

Tasting notes

Tannic and little evolved, the 1989 is well made and well vinified. Full of aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant with elegant and fragrant notes of mineral and flowers, it is medium-bodied, racy and well-endowed on the palate. (R. Parker 1996)
