Chateau Talbot 1976 - Saint-Julien
Presentation of the domain:
Chateau Talbot is located in the commune of Saint-Julien in the Médoc. This estate has a rich history, dating back to 1648, when it was established by John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury. Since then, the estate has been extended and modernised, whilst retaining its original charm and character. The vineyard covers 110 hectares in one piece, planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Chateau Talbot is classified as a fourth grand cru in the 1855 classification.
The estate is renowned for the consistency and quality of its vintages.
The estate produces three wines:
- Château Talbot: the estate’s first wine, aged in barrels for fifteen months in 50% new barrels.
- Le Connétable de Talbot: second wine from vines younger than the first wine, aged for 12 months in barrels.
- Le Caillou Blanc: an atypical white wine for the Médoc because it comes from Cordier's desire to replant white vines in Saint-Julien, it is aged in barrels for 12 months and then on lees for 9 months.
The 1976 vintage:
The 1976 vintage in Saint-Julien was characterized by contrasting climatic conditions. Despite a hot summer, there was abundant rain in September, which influenced the ripeness of the grapes. The winegrowers had to be selective in the harvest to obtain high quality grapes. The result is a vintage that offers wines with a beautiful structure and refreshing acidity. Talbot obtains the excellent score of 86 Parker points which, for the time, is excellent.
Food and wine pairing:
Château Talbot 1976 is a wine that pairs perfectly with roasted meat dishes, such as grilled beef tenderloin or herbed lamb. The wine's rich flavors and elegant tannins combine harmoniously with the textures and aromas of these dishes.
Wuat's Review: We have already had the chance to taste this vintage of Talbot in a blind tasting and, we were "off" by more than 10 years in our estimation of the vintage. Talbots from the Cordier era seem never to age.
By filling out this form we ask ourselves if we have ever been truly disappointed by a Talbot. And the answer is no! Talbot is the taster's lifeline, the wine that will please everyone in all circumstances. Any Bordeaux lover, or rather wine lover, must have at least one in the cellar, ready to be tasted.
