History of Château Beychevelle
Château Beychevelle, located in the Saint-Julien appellation, is an iconic Bordeaux estate. Founded in the 16th century, it takes its name from the tradition that ships passing the property would lower their sails ("baisse-voile", which evolved into "Beychevelle") in homage to the first Duke of Épernon, a powerful admiral. Nicknamed the "Versailles of the Médoc", this estate is distinguished by its elegance and majestic architecture. With vineyards ideally located on gravelly ridges near the Gironde, Beychevelle produces wines that combine finesse, balance and excellent aging potential.
Presentation of the Saint-Julien appellation
Located on the left bank of Bordeaux, between Pauillac and Margaux, the Saint-Julien appellation is known for its wines that combine power and elegance. With 11 Grands Crus Classés, Saint-Julien represents only 6% of the Médoc production but is distinguished by its consistent quality. The gravelly soils of this appellation provide ideal conditions for the noble Bordeaux grape varieties, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Saint-Julien wines are renowned for their aromatic complexity, tannic structure and longevity.
Presentation of the 2002 vintage in Bordeaux
The 2002 vintage was marked by a cool and rainy spring, followed by a milder summer, allowing for a gradual ripening of the grapes. Although the weather conditions were delicate, they produced a classic vintage, requiring rigorous sorting of the grapes. The red wines of the Médoc, particularly those of Saint-Julien, are distinguished by their balance and freshness. The best estates, such as Château Beychevelle, were able to produce elegant wines, with supple tannins and a beautiful aromatic purity. This vintage is particularly appreciated for its drinkability today, while offering good aging potential.
