Presentation of Château Fortia:
A 36-hectare estate nestled in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation since the 18th century, the Château takes its name from the place called "La Fortiasse" where it is ideally located. Of the 36 hectares, 32 are dedicated to vines, while the remaining 4 hectares contribute to the natural balance of the estate. Around 90% of the vineyard is covered with rolled pebbles, renowned for their ability to regulate soil temperature, thus providing optimal conditions for the vines.
The estate focuses on growing 6 grape varieties out of the 13 authorized by the appellation, including the classics Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre for the reds, and Roussanne, Clairette and Grenache Blanc for the white wines.
Baron’s Vintage 2016:
This mid-range cuvée from the estate is composed primarily of Grenache (about 50%) and Syrah (about 40%), with a touch of Mourvèdre (about 10%), all 90% destemmed. The 2016 vintage is described as “exceptional,” a term that is perhaps overused these days, but the details of the tasting will reveal more.
Tasting notes Cuvée du Baron Château Fortia 2016 by WUAT in February 2024: PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
To be completely transparent, we were not familiar with Château Fortia before discovering it in the cellar of a connoisseur. Knowing that our customers are generally demanding in their choices, it was difficult to imagine that this vintage could disappoint.
We decided to start tasting it. A 2016 wine is a baby for us; the nose is powerful but unstructured, a little green, with notes of fresh cherry and strawberry jam. The lack of cohesion is felt in the mouth, the tannins are a little green although fine, with peppery notes of Syrah that are noticeable without being frank. After a few hours, it is better but still not optimal. At this stage, we did not think to offer it to you on WUAT.
24 hours later, it is a completely different wine, with balance, harmony, roundness and pleasure! We validate this wine, but with instructions for use.
Conclusion: A wine to decant for at least 6 hours before tasting and which can wait for many years in the cellar.
