Chateau Gilette "Doux 1955" - Sauternes
4.5 hectare estate located in the village of Preignac in Sauternes. The estate is unique in the region for its tradition of prolonged aging of its sweet white wines before marketing and, in most cases, the wines will spend 15 to 20 years in concrete vats and minimal (if any) aging in barrels.
The flagship wine of Château Gilette is the Crème de Tête, produced in varying volumes from the first juices from the press. Gilette wines (including the Crème de Tête) are a blend of mainly Sémillon, with a little Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.
2020 Tasting Notes:
A medium-dark golden yellow color. The aromas from the bottle can quickly fill a room. Candied kumquats, orange marmalade and tart apricot. Rich, surprisingly youthful, apricot and mineral palate with laser-like definition, a dried mushroom note and good acidity; long finish.
Critics are unanimous that this 1955 Gilette Doux does not show its age and seems immortal. A perfect bottle to celebrate a 1955 vintage.
Exceptional provenance and colour: These bottles come from a cellar of a great Swiss wine enthusiast and collector. We have acquired the complete collection containing more than 200 bottles of mainly French and Italian wines. The bottles have all been preserved following their purchase en primeur or shortly after their marketing on site, in a natural cellar buried under a 16th century convent. A damp cellar, which is why some labels are very worn. The levels are generally excellent or perfect and the most "fragile" bottles testify to conservation in total darkness for more than 30 years!
