Chateau Lagrange 1987 - Saint-Julien
This 3rd classified growth of Saint-Julien is in some ways the unloved of the group. However, it shows a regularity and an admirable quality which allows it to shine on the "weak" vintages.
Tasted in March 2021, we were surprised by its consistency. 1987 Has the reputation of... no, forget it, 1987 doesn't really have a reputation. When opened, it is austere, almost dusty, in short, it is not a very welcoming wine, whether on the nose or in the mouth. Nevertheless, we feel that it can relax and that it has something to offer. After a good hour (two in fact), it becomes much more pleasant, rather round in the mouth, quite ample, it offers aromas of undergrowth, leather and a finish on liquorice. The structure is quite impressive for a 1987.
We recommend opening it at least two hours before a meal and accompanying it with a simple but powerful dish (grilled eggplant, pan-fried mushrooms, black trumpets in sauce).
