History of Château Pichon-Longueville Baron
Château Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville, often simply called "Pichon Baron", is one of the largest estates in Pauillac, a legendary appellation of the Médoc. It owes its name to Jacques de Pichon, Baron de Longueville, who created the estate in the 17th century.
The estate has been divided into two separate entities since the 19th century: Pichon Baron and Pichon Comtesse (or Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande). The two châteaux share a common heritage but produce wines with distinct styles.
In 1987, AXA Millésimes undertook to modernize the château's facilities, allowing it to regain its place among the great Pauillacs. The wine is distinguished by its elegance, depth and tannic structure, with remarkable aging potential.
Presentation of the great wine of "Château Pichon Baron"
Château Pichon Baron produces a classic, rich and structured Pauillac, with a dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. The terroir of deep gravel on limestone subsoil gives the wines their power and longevity.
Typical assembly:
- Cabernet Sauvignon : 60-80%
- Merlot : 20-40%
- Sometimes a small proportion of Cabernet Franc or Petit Verdot.
Pichon Baron wines are known for their solid tannic structure, ripe black fruit aromas, and an ability to develop beautifully in bottle for several decades.
Presentation of the 1983 vintage in Pauillac
The 1983 vintage was marked by favorable climatic conditions:
- Warm, dry spring favoring rapid and uniform flowering.
- Sunny summer with periods of moderate heat.
- Some rain in September, but overall the health situation was impeccable.
The 1983 Pauillac wines are fleshy, complex and accessible. This vintage is often considered to be more supple and fruitier than 1982, with a beautiful finesse and excellent aging potential.
Presentation and specificity of this vintage in this vintage
- Terroir: Deep gravel characteristic of Pauillac.
- Vinification: Traditional, with aging in French oak barrels (50% new) for around 18 months.
Bottle condition:
- Good level ranging from neck to low neck, we offer all three bottles at the same price (the lowest on the market).
- Worn and stained label, the labels of old Pichon Parons have often aged badly.
Tasting:
The 1983 Château Pichon Baron is a refined expression of Pauillac, combining power and elegance:
- Nose: Aromas of blackcurrant, black plum, leather and a touch of cedar, accompanied by spicy notes.
- Palate: Well balanced, with supple but still present tannins. Persistent finish with notes of blond tobacco and dark chocolate.
- Aging potential: Perfect to drink now, but can still be kept for a few years for lovers of mature wines.
Anecdote: The rivalry between Pichon Baron and Pichon Comtesse regularly animates the debates of Pauillac lovers. At Wuat , we like to go against the grain by preferring Pichon Baron to its "cousin" Comtesse... which, incidentally, allows us to make great savings, because Pichon Comtesse is often more expensive!
