Chateau d'Yquem 1969 - Sauternes
History of the House
Château d'Yquem, unquestionably the jewel of sweet wines, is the only Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification for Sauternes and Barsac wines. Located on an exceptional terroir of 113 hectares south of Bordeaux, Yquem is renowned for its microclimate favorable to the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) which gives its wines their complexity and their unmatched aging capacity.
Since the 17th century, Yquem has embodied excellence, combining know-how and innovation. Each vintage is produced with meticulous care: only the berries reaching an optimal concentration are selected during successive harvests, sometimes berry by berry.
Vintages considered too weak or not suitable for producing the great wine are downgraded. Thus the vintages 2012, 1992, 1974, 1972, 1964, 1952, 1951, 1930, 1915 and 1910 never existed.
Presentation of the 1969 Vintage
Although 1969 was a generally difficult year in Bordeaux, Château d'Yquem took advantage of the climatic conditions to produce a wine of rare elegance. This vintage is distinguished by aromas of candied fruit, dried apricot and honey, complemented by notes of saffron and superb acidity, guaranteeing remarkable freshness. Today, it offers an evolved complexity, worthy of the finest verticals.
