Clos de la Coulée de Serrant 1980 - Nicolas Joly Savennières

This prestigious cuvée is one of the greatest white wines of the Loire and one of the most famous biodynamic cuvées. It is produced by the iconic winemaker Nicolas Joly, a fervent defender of biodynamics. Clos de la Coulée de Serrant is a unique estate, with a history dating back to the 12th century, where the vines have been cultivated according to the principles of biodynamics for over 30 years.

The 1980 vintage is considered the first biodynamic vintage for Nicolas Joly. The cuvée is produced from grapes from Chenin Blanc vines, grown in an exceptional terroir.

However, this vintage is also a kind of toss-up for the taster. Indeed, the wine can offer an exceptional tasting experience, even the greatest of one's life, or disappoint due to a poor evolution of the bottle. The corks used at the time were clearly not the best on the market and Biodynamic wines are very fragile. You have to rely on the color of the wine (very encouraging here) before starting. It is therefore recommended to taste this vintage with an open mind and a certain dose of curiosity and audacity.

Tasting advice : Open at least 12 hours before tasting if you want to enjoy all it has to offer. Be careful, this is a fragile wine that really does not appreciate strong temperature variations. We do not ship this bottle in June and September unless expressly requested by the buyer.

Tasting note June 2022 : Medium golden colour, a crazy nose of sautéed wild mushrooms and Stilton cheese followed by lighter aromas of tropical fruits and sea spray. Over 40 years old and still plenty of definition on the palate, both rich and light, with hints of hazelnut followed by a sweet citrus note on the finish. A real treat to taste.

Exceptional provenance : These bottles come from a cellar of a great Swiss wine enthusiast and collector. We have acquired the complete collection containing more than 200 bottles of mainly French and Italian wines. The bottles have all been preserved following their purchase en primeur or shortly after their marketing on site, in a natural cellar buried under a 16th century convent. A damp cellar, which is why some labels are very worn. The levels are generally excellent or perfect and the most "fragile" bottles testify to conservation in total darkness for more than 30 years!
