Corton-Charlemagne
Low stock: 1 left
A beautiful legend surrounds this appellation: highly prized by Charlemagne, Corton was at that time an exclusively red wine. It was only at the end of the emperor's life that the south-facing plots were planted with chardonnay, to produce a white wine that would not stain his flowery beard.
We had the chance to taste this very great Corton-Charlemagne in the 1978 vintage.
It is always with a certain emotion that we open bottles of a certain age and even more so when they are older than us.
We were very impressed by the clear and perfect colour of this 43 year old wine, it must be said that it has always been kept in the cellar since then, which shows that the storage conditions are really very important.
We have seen much more recent white wines in worse condition, be careful with the light (in addition to everything else)!
Tasting notes:
1st nose: Fresh, minty, white flowers, fresh quince, hawthorn
2nd nose: Eucalyptus, persimmon, papaya, calisson, almond paste, orange blossom
Palate: Very dry, mineral, tense. Lots of freshness, saffron, paprika
The retro nasal note is slightly pastry-like, buttery and vanilla-like.
A wine of a very high standard that we are likely to remember for a long time!
