Côte-Rôtie "La Turque" 1998 - E Guigal
About the estate: Is it really necessary to introduce you to the E.Guigal estate (E for Etienne but we know you already knew that)? Established in Ampuis since 1946, this large family estate is currently managed in the best possible way by the third generation of winemakers. The estate owns some of the most illustrious plots in the Rhone Valley, including this one.
About the cuvée: La Turque is a goldsmith's cuvée, a blend of powerful Syrah softened with a little Viognier. After a careful sorting that will eliminate 25% of the harvest from only 1 HA, it benefits from 40 months of aging in new barrels. This plot held in monopoly by Guigal is the sunniest of the trio and the one with the youngest vines (25 years on average), the grapes voluntarily ripen a little more than on the other two cuvées.
About the 1998 vintage: One of the greatest
1998 is often compared to the 1990 vintage in Côte-Rôtie and this is justified by the extremely high quality of these two vintages. However, 1998, due to its fantastic aging potential, is probably superior to 1990 (but this is only our opinion).
"Offers fabulously pure aromas of raspberry nuanced with cherry liqueur, smoke, licorice and roast meat." 98 Points Robert Parker
WUAT Note: This bottle comes with many others from a cellar of a great Syrah lover. They have been beautifully preserved in a humid natural cellar, on metal cradles. The labels are often very disintegrated. We cleaned them very carefully and filmed them.
