Gevrey-Chambertin "Au Vellé" 1996 - Denis Mortet
A very fine achievement by the late winemaker who died in 2006.
Denis Mortet's wines are now among the most sought-after on the collectors' and enthusiasts' market (and this is perfectly justified). Denis Mortet's wines are generally powerful and made for aging. The style has changed significantly since Arnaud Mortet took over the estate.
We hope this bottle will be tasted and enjoyed.
Tasting notes:
This wine is a deep ruby/purple with aromas of sweet, juicy cherries and cassis. It is oily, fat, ample, fleshy, firmly structured, square and masculine, packed with blackberries, iron and stones. This tannic, brooding and austere offering will require patience, but I am confident it will evolve beautifully - not unlike a similarly constructed Nuits. R. Parker
WUAT Notes: This bottle comes from the cellar of a great lover of Burgundy and Rhone Syrah wines. The labels may have been damaged by the humidity of the natural cellar. But the quality of conservation is irreproachable, and the essential is there.
