THE HAUT-BRION MISSION 1972 - PESSAC-LEOGNAN
Presentation of the domain:
La Mission Haut-Brion is a prestigious wine estate located in Pessac, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, in the Bordeaux region. The estate was classified as a Grand Cru Classé in 1855, and is renowned for the quality of its wines. The property covers approximately 30 hectares and benefits from gravelly and clay-limestone soil.
Presentation of the vintage
The La Mission Haut-Brion cuvée is the estate's main cuvée. It is made from a blend of Bordeaux red grape varieties, with a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged in oak barrels for around 18 months. This cuvée benefits, as is often the case in Graves, from a great aging potential.
About the 1972 vintage:
Don't run away too quickly! Yes, the 1972 vintage is far from being the most flamboyant for Bordeaux wines (nor for French wines in general, with the exception of the Rhone Valley). The wines are often diluted and lack substance. On the other hand, the high acidity allows them to age honorably.
The 1972 "Mission" is considered one of the best wines of the vintage along with Margaux! As evidenced by the 86 points awarded by Parker (and at that time he was not really generous).
If you want to try the 72 vintage, this great bottle is a great opportunity.
