History of the House
Second wine of the prestigious Château Haut-Brion, the Bahans de Château Haut-Brion was produced until 2007 before becoming the "Clarence de Haut-Brion". This wine embodies the elegance and know-how of this emblematic house of Pessac-Léognan. Haut-Brion, premier cru classé in 1855 for its reds and first in the Graves classification in 1959, remains a pillar of Bordeaux wine history, known for its excellence and innovation.
The 51-hectare vineyard lies on a soil of deep gravel, rich in quartz and pebbles, with a clay-sand subsoil. The grape varieties mainly combine Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with a touch of Petit Verdot. The second wine, made from young vines, benefits from the same meticulous care as the grand vin, offering great accessibility while retaining the inimitable style of Haut-Brion.
Presentation of the Cuvée
The 1996 vintage benefited from a year marked by a hot and dry summer, offering superb maturity to the grapes. The 1996 Bahans de Haut-Brion is distinguished by its silky structure, its balance and its complex aromas of ripe red fruits, leather and cedar. On the palate, the finesse of the tannins and the beautiful persistence reveal all the mastery of this legendary estate.
Food and Wine Pairing
This Pessac-Léognan is a perfect accompaniment to grilled or roasted meats, such as a rack of lamb or a fillet of beef. It also pairs well with mature cheeses or mushroom-based dishes to enhance its woody aromas and elegant texture.
