Château Léoville Barton 1982 - Saint-Julien

Presentation of the domain:

Located in the Saint-Julien appellation, Château Léoville Barton is a historic wine estate that dates back to the 18th century. Owned by the Barton family for over 200 years, the estate was classified as a 2nd Classified Growth in 1855. Covering an area of 47 hectares, the vineyard is planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Barton family's philosophy is to produce wines that reflect the unique terroir of Saint-Julien, while highlighting the purity and elegance of each vintage.

Presentation of the vintage

The Léoville Barton cuvée is the estate's first wine, considered one of the benchmarks of the Saint-Julien appellation. It is the result of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, harvested by hand from the estate's best plots. The vinification is done in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with prolonged maceration and 18 months of aging in French oak barrels (60% of which are new).

The 1982 vintage

The 1982 vintage is a legendary year for Bordeaux, marked by ideal climatic conditions that produced wines of perfect maturity, concentration and structure. The 1982 Léoville Barton is a true masterpiece of the Saint-Julien appellation.

Made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon (around 72%), supplemented with Merlot (20%) and a touch of Cabernet Franc (8%), this wine offers a classic expression of the Saint-Julien terroir.

After more than 40 years of evolution, the Léoville Barton 1982 reveals a complex and captivating bouquet with aromas of blackcurrant, candied plum, cedar, tobacco and undergrowth. On the palate, the tannic structure is perfectly melted, revealing a silky texture and impressive depth. The finish is long, elegant and marked by mineral and spicy notes. This wine is a model of balance between power, freshness and finesse.

Parker Tasting Notes from 1997:

Léoville Barton 82 harks back to the rough wines of yesteryear, with its terribly tannic and impenetrable character and its enormous richness in extract. (...) Retaining an opaque robe of a slightly cloudy purple-garnet, it releases a nose of cedar, liquorice, black truffle and sweet ripe fruits. Still closed and not quite evolved, it is very full-bodied, tannic and intensely concentrated, with a thick and rich texture. 90 Points

WUAT Review:

To fully enjoy the aromas and flavors of the Léoville Barton 1982, it is recommended to decant it for an hour (or three) before serving.

At Wuat we really like Léoville Barton, the quality is very consistent, the style of the wine is classic and made for aging. In addition to that the price is more "reasonable" than another Léoville? So why not let yourself be seduced?
