Léoville Barton 1985 - Saint-Julien
Presentation of the domain:
Located in the Saint-Julien appellation, Château Léoville Barton is a historic wine estate that dates back to the 18th century. Owned by the Barton family for over 200 years, the estate was classified as a 2nd Classified Growth in 1855. Covering an area of 47 hectares, the vineyard is planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Barton family's philosophy is to produce wines that reflect the unique terroir of Saint-Julien, while highlighting the purity and elegance of each vintage.
Presentation of the vintage
The Léoville Barton cuvée is the estate's first wine, considered one of the benchmarks of the Saint-Julien appellation. It is the result of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, harvested by hand from the estate's best plots. The vinification is done in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with prolonged maceration and 18 months of aging in French oak barrels (60% of which are new).
Presentation of the 1985 vintage:
The 1985 vintage was particularly successful in Bordeaux. Favourable weather, with a sunny spring and uniform ripening, allowed the grapes to reach excellent maturity. The harvest, which took place in perfect conditions, gave rise to balanced, elegant wines with a lovely freshness.
For Léoville Barton 1985, this translates into a wine that is remarkably accessible today, but with many more years ahead of it. When tasted, it is distinguished by a deep ruby color with slightly tiled reflections, testifying to its evolution. On the nose, complex aromas of candied red fruits, cedar, leather and fine spices blend harmoniously. On the palate, the attack is silky, the tannins perfectly melted, and the finish long and persistent on notes of truffle and tobacco.
Food and wine pairing
The Léoville Barton 1985 pairs well with grilled or roasted red meats, dishes in sauce, mature cheeses and game dishes. It is recommended to uncork the bottle at least one hour before serving, at a temperature of 18°C.
Parker Tasting Notes in 1997:
Deep ruby-garnet in color, it exudes a complex, full and intense nose of sweet, very ripe redcurrant, mineral, cedar, spices and roasted herbs. Medium-bodied, it displays exceptional balance on the palate, and deploys, in addition to a generous fruitiness, a persistent and velvety finish with supple tannins. 95 Points
