Chateau Lynch Moussas
Vineyards, Terroir, Grapes, Winemaking
Lynch Moussas' 60-hectare Rive Gauche vineyard is planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. This shows an increase in Cabernet Sauvignon vines over the years. Lynch Moussas is one of the few classified vineyards on the Left Bank to grow only two grape varieties.
The vineyard, like many Bordeaux estates, has vines in different communes of the appellation. Lynch Moussas has vines planted not far from Pichon Lalande, Grand Puy Lacoste and Batailley. But the best plots are placed near the château.
On average, the vines are 25 years old. The vineyard is planted at a vine density of 8,300 vines per hectare. The terroir of Château Lynch Moussas is mainly made up of soils based on gravel, clay, sand and limestone.
Lynch Moussas is a huge estate. A large part of the property is not cultivated with vines. In fact, nearly 140 hectares of land are devoted to greenery, forest and park.
For the production of Château Lynch-Moussas wine, vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in vats. Yields are slightly high by current standards, at nearly 55 hectoliters per hectare.
Lynch Moussas wine is aged in 60% new French oak barrels for an average of 18 months. There is a second wine, Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas, which debuted in 2001. On average, Chateau Lynch Moussas produces nearly 20,000 cases of wine per vintage.
