Terrasses du Larzac 2018 - Domaine de Montcalmès
Located 30km northwest of Montpellier, the Domaine de Montcalmès takes its name from the hamlet of Montcalmès, now abandoned, but from which part of the paternal family comes.
Until 1998, the family business produced wine entirely in a cooperative cellar, but that year Frédéric Pourtalié and his father decided to create a private cellar and carried out their first vinification in 1999, thus producing a confidential quantity of 5,000 bottles.
Now, 50,000 bottles are produced, from 22 hectares of vines planted in four communes, all in the Terrasses du Larzac appellation.
Since 2015, all of the estate’s production has been certified organic.
This vintage is aged in oak barrels of one wine, two wines or more, for 24 months. The wine is not filtered, the three grape varieties are blended two months before bottling in Lune Vieille.
Vines aged 30 years on average, yield 25hl/ha.
Tasted in January 2022 : A powerful but very precise wine. The nose is soft and a little alcoholic when opened. Comforting, it offers notes of scrubland, myrtle, fig and blackberries. The palate is very incisive, the attack frank, the tannins are very present and will require many years of aging or a serious passage in a carafe to round out. The aromas of flint, earth and spices are precise and harmonious. A wine to pair with a spicy meal (Thai or Indian for example) or meat in sauce.
