Pol Roger Extra Reserve Cuvée 1996
The Pol Roger estate in Epernay was founded in 1848, when Pol Roger, aged 18, sold his first bottles. The house of Epernay has remained family-run. It is known for being Winston Churchill's favourite champagne. It is also the benchmark wine of the English court, and was notably served at the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
Formerly called "extra cuvée de réserve vintage" (a somewhat long name, it must be admitted), this cuvée is now simply called "Brut Vintage".
It is difficult to obtain technical details on the vinification of the 1996 vintage. It is most likely a blend of 60% Pinot Noir / 40% Chardonnay. The vinification is done in stainless steel vats and the aging in the cellar extends over more than 5 years.
WUAT's opinion: We frequently taste Vintage Pol Roger, with a great aptitude for aging, they offer a very classic style. The mouth is round, creamy on notes of pastry and toast but always held by an acidity and refreshing citrus aromas. We strongly advise you to let this champagne breathe for a few dozen minutes before tasting. A short passage in a carafe for those of you in a hurry is not to be excluded.
