Terrasses du Larzac 2018 - Domaine de Montcalmès
Located 30km north-west of Montpellier, the Domaine de Montcalmès takes its name from the hamlet of Montcalmès, now abandoned, but from which part of the paternal family comes.
Until 1998, the family business vinified entirely in a cooperative cellar, but that year Frédéric Pourtalié and his father decided to create a private cellar and carried out his first vinification in 1 999, thus producing a confidential quantity of 5,000 bottles.
From now on, 50,000 bottles are produced, from 22 hectares of vines located in four towns, all in the Terres du Larzac appellation.
Since 2015, all of the estate's production has been certified organic.
This cuvée is aged in oak barrels of one, two or more wines, for 24 months. The wine is not filtered, the three grape varieties are blended two months before bottling in Lune Vieille.
Vines 30 years old on average, yield 25hl / ha.
Tasted in January 2022: A powerful but very precise wine. The nose is sweet and a little alcoholic on opening. Comforting, it offers notes of garrigue, myrtle, fig and blackberries. The mouth is very incisive, the attack frank, the tannins are very present and will require long years of keeping or a serious passage in carafe to round off. The flint, earth and spice aromas are precise and harmonious. A wine to pair with a spicy meal (Thai or Indian for example) or meat in sauce.
