In the Médoc, the 2001 vintage is an irreproachable great classic. In Graves it is "the" great vintage of the whites but there are also some very beautiful red wines not to be overlooked. The Libournais is not, either, to be outdone.
In Sauternes, it's almost perfection! The balance is perfect, there is no fault.
In Burgundy, the Côtes de Nuits stand out from the Côte de Beaune which is more irregular because of the hail. The whites are rather successful despite some problems of maturity.
2001 is unfortunately not the year of Champagne, however, few houses have released a vintage.
In the Rhône Valley, the reds are tannic and rich and there are some very beautiful Châteauneufs!
