Pol Roger Extra Cuvée de Réserve 1996
The Pol Roger estate, in Epernay, was born in 1848, when Pol Roger, 18, sold his first bottles.
The Sparnacian house remained family. It is known to be Winston Churchill's favorite champagne. It is also the benchmark wine of the English court, and was notably served at the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Henry.
Formerly called "extra vintage reserve cuvée" (a bit long name it must be admitted) this cuvée is now simply called "Brut Vintage".
It is difficult to obtain technical details on the vinification of the 1996 vintage. It is most likely a 60% Pinot Noir / 40% Chardonnay blend. Vinification is done in stainless steel vats and aging in the cellar lasts for more than 5 years.
Opinion of WUAT: We frequently taste Vintage Pol Roger, endowed with a great aptitude for aging, they offer a very classic style. The palate is round, creamy with notes of pastry and toast but still held together by acidity and refreshing citrus aromas. We strongly advise you to let the champagne breathe for a few tens of minutes before tasting. A short decanter for those in a hurry cannot be ruled out.
