The estate owes its name to the inventor of the telegraph, Claude Chappe, who installed his first relay towers on the estate in 1821. The estate, which had already been owned by the Brunier family for over a century, was not yet exploited for wine production.
As is often the case in Châteauneuf, the estate is of a respectable size. With its 65ha of vines with an average age of over 65, the estate produces only around 200,000 bottles per year. The yields are therefore very low.
About the 1989 vintage: Parker gave it a mark of 87 pts (which in the 90's was a really high mark). It is one of the greatest successes in the field of the last thirty years. It must be said that the 1989 vintage is overall a great success throughout the Rhône Valley.
