Château Canon La Gaffelière 1990 - Saint-Emilion

The terroir of Château Canon La Gaffelière is located at the foot of the medieval village of Saint-Emilion. The soils are clay-limestone and sandy, well filtering and receptive to heat.

Thus, the grape variety has an atypical structure compared to the appellation represented by a perfect balance between Merlot and Cabernet.  The Cabernets develop wonderfully, bringing power and aromatic complexity to the opulence of the Merlot, producing wines of natural elegance and finesse. The plot lots are vinified in a homogeneous way. The winemaking phases take place smoothly to express the best of the harvest. The aging is done on fine lees to bring out the qualities specific to the wine.

Respect for the vines is essential and the interventions minimal in order to let each vintage express itself fully.

Tasting notes: 94 Parker Points

This deep wine, whose deep ruby-purple color is still intact, exudes copious aromas of grilled meat, blackcurrant, cedar and sweet oak. Very full-bodied, with moderate tannins, it manifests an extremely concentrated, thick and rich character on the palate. (R. Parker 1996)

Exceptional provenance in  OWC: These bottles come from a cellar of a great Swiss enthusiast and collector. We have acquired the complete collection containing more than 200 bottles of mainly French and Italian wines. The bottles were all preserved following their purchase en primeur or shortly after their marketing on site, in a natural cellar buried under a 16th century convent. A damp cellar, which is why some labels are very worn. The levels are generally excellent or perfect and the most "fragile" bottles demonstrate storage in total darkness for more than 30 years!
