Clos de la Roche Grand-Cru 2000 - Dominique Laurent
Presentation of the domain:
Dominique Laurent is an artisanal but quality merchant based in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The portfolio is based on very small plots of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines spread across dozens of appellations across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune.
Quantities of individual wines are often minimal, with some wines produced in a single barrel, making only 300 bottles. Amusing fact: some labels produced in very few copies contain gross errors or typos. Here, for example, the counter label indicates "without filtering or readification" which means nothing.
The first vintage was in 1988 and Laurent soon after gained a reputation for using 200% new barrels, a process which involves drawing the wine from a new barrel to age it further in a second new barrel.
Presentation of the vintage:
As is often the case in Burgundy, Le Clos de la Roche takes its name from its heavily limestone terroir. On the ground, only 30 centimeters of earth, few stones, and large boulders.
With 17 hectares (16.89 exactly) for an annual production of around 84,000 bottles. It is the largest closed in Morey-Saint-Denis.
Despite its size, it is considered one of the best climats in Morey-Saint-Denis and produces fleshy and structured wines with cherry and truffle characters.
